ABOUT
ROBERT D. KARNS
I was born in San Francisco’s Presidio in 1974 and grew up all over the Bay Area, including the Outer Mission District and Concord.
After earning a Bachelor’s in Advertising Design in 1998 from the Academy of Art, I’ve spent over 26 years honing my skills as an Art Director and Graphic Designer.
Growing up as a latchkey kid, I had the time and space to nurture my imagination and develop survival skills. I’ve always been a storyteller and a creative jack-of-all-trades, which helped me express through my artwork.
My love for art and imagination began early—copying images from the TV as a toddler, drawing album covers, and immersing myself in pop culture and cartoons as a pre-teen. I dreamed of being a comic book artist or animator, and during high school, I drew portraits and original art for local High School athletes and the Latin Club. Encouraged early on by my high school art teacher Mr. Steven Seable, I pursued a career in the arts. As I learned the craft of Design and Art Direction, I fell for surrealism and used illustration for my personal growth.
I’m inspired by artists like Egon Schiele, Salvador Dalí, Jean-Michel Basquiat, Joan Miró, Paul Cézanne, Vincent Van Gogh, Paul Gauguin, and Pablo Picasso. I started with playful surrealist cartoons and later delved into abstract art. My “Random Connections” series emerged from a meditative process of reptitive lines and shapes, letting time pass by as I focused on a peaceful state to create.
As I explored further, I developed the GeoSeries, including GeoMasks and GeoTotems, which came from improvising patterns and shapes starting with gestural lines. During the pandemic, I took up traditional oil painting with a group of artists led by Bay Area Master Artist Anthony Holdsworth. Reconnecting with art history and discovering the personal stories behind each artist, I was moved to tell my own story through art.
Welcome to MundoRDK, my creative studio. I’m excited to showcase my design skills, graphic artwork, paintings and share my creative journey. Come see my world and get inspired to create with me!
